Cycling Holiday Based at Amsterdam [4-10]

Cycle along canals, rivers and the former Zuiderzee. Cycling is probably more popular in Amsterdam than in any other city in the world. The narrow streets and canals of the 17th century city centre make it an ideal means of transport. You can also cycle out of the city along cycle paths and through parks to find yourself in a serene, water-rich landscape dotted with pretty historic villages such as Broek in Waterland, Muiden and Oudekerk aan de Amstel.

Options:

Route A   19 km to Oudekerk aan de Amstel
Route B   48 km via Durgerdam and Broek in Waterland
Route C   47 km to Weesp and Muiden

Touroperator:

In this tour, you can choose between 2 hotels:
Hotel Neighbour’s Magnolia: This authentic hotel is located in the centre of Amsterdam, on walking distance of the Museumplein with its Rijksmuseum, the Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam and the Van Gogh Museum.
Ramada Apollo Amsterdam: this 4-star hotel is located right next to the Rembrandtpark and the ring road A10. This impressing building is 15 minutes away from the old centre of Amsterdam and has a perfect connection to the centre with the tram.

Route A
You can cycle this short route on the day you arrive. Cycle along the Amstel to the picturesque old village of Oudekerk aan de Amstel. The famous painter Rembrandt loved to walk along the river banks here, and made many drawings and etchings of Amstelland. Cycle back to Amsterdam on the other side of the river past the country villas built by wealthy residents of Amsterdam in the 17th and 18th centuries.

Route B
Cycle through the city centre to the IJ. Behind Central Station, take a ferry across this former estuary. On the other side of the IJ, you will leave the city and arrive in Waterland, with its peat meadows rich in bird life, ancient canals and watercourses. Cycle through the villages of Durgerdam and Uitdam, which were once on the shores of the Zuiderzee, to Broek in Waterland. All the houses in this beautiful village are timber-framed due to the weak sub-soil, and are mostly painted in pastel colours. Cycle back into Amsterdam along the Noordhollandsch Kanaal. This route will take you back to your hotel, passing old neighbourhoods and a host of historic buildings on the way.

Route C
Cycle along the banks of the rivers Amstel and Waver through the magnificent peat polder to reach the fortified town of Weesp. Follow the meandering river Vecht until you arrive in Muiden, where you can also see the mediaeval castle of Muiderslot. Following the banks of the IJmeer (which used to be the Zuiderzee) cycle to IJburg, the newest district of Amsterdam, which is built on artificial islands. Cross the Amsterdam-Rijnkanaal to cycle back into the city centre though architecturally interesting late 19th century neighbourhoods.
