IJsselmeer, Around the IJsselmeer without Afsluitdijk [7-99]
This tour follows the coast of the former Zuiderzee. After the completion of the Afsluitdijk, the barrier dyke which cuts off the inlet, this former sea was transformed into a lake surrounded by fertile polders. The six counties surrounding the IJsselmeer visited by this tour offer a wide variety of landscape and history. While enjoying marvellous panoramas, you will travel on dykes and cycle paths alongside water gates, reed beds and swamps, national parks, meadows, farms and picturesque fishing villages. In the historical cities of Amsterdam, Hoorn, Enkhuizen, Kampen and Harderwijk many reminders can be seen of the rich era of the VOC (the Dutch East India Company).
