Stadspoort Dromedaris

Stadspoort Dromedaris

Town Gate in the Town of Enkhuizen. Built in 1540 and doubled as a defensive tower and prison.

Back when the town was surrounded by a defensive wall, this was one of the town gates through which it was possible to enter and leave town. It doubled as a defensive tower and prison. Built in 1540, it was also known as Zuiderpoort (southern gateway into town) and Ketenpoort (the gate leading to the salt refineries just outside town – salt in great quantities was needed to preserve herring for export). Its later name was Drommedaris meaning dromedary. The tower boasts Hemony carillon bells.
