The Beemster

The Beemster

‚ÄčThe Beemster, the reclaimed land, which was reclaimed by Leeghwater (a builder of mills from d Rijp) in 1612.

The land was kept dry with 50 land reclaiming mills for three hundred years. In the beginning of the 20th century they were replaced by modern installations and the mills disappeared. Remarkable are the chessboard-like patterns in the land. The Unesco has listed the Beemster as World Heritage.
